# On Mobile

### Trading stocks

#### Step 1: Open Backpack and Find a Stock or ETF

Open the [**Backpack app**](https://backpack.app/) and log in to your account, then tap Stocks. Find the stock or ETF you want to trade, or use Search to look it up by company name or ticker. Tap the asset to open its details page.

> New to Backpack? [Create an account](/exchange/exchange-account/create-a-new-account/how-to-create-an-account-on-mobile.md) to get started.

#### Step 2: Choose Buy or Sell

Select **Buy** or **Sell**, then enter the number of shares you want to trade.

> If you don't currently hold any shares of the selected stock or ETF, only the **Buy** option will be available.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1790800155-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F3kiM6CAFBZoTCJcZ8X7k%2Fuploads%2FgybqzLLXa9P5iBtfzvOP%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=396c1846-1426-4afc-a703-e38d7b50fbb3" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

**Quick Amount Shortcuts**

On the Buy side, you can choose:

* 25%
* 50%
* 75%
* Max

These shortcuts size your order based on your available USD balance.

**Fractional Shares**

Fractional shares are available during **regular trading hours (9:30 AM–4:00 PM ET, Monday–Friday)**.

Some eligible securities also support fractional share trading during **weekends and U.S. market holidays**.

If fractional shares aren't available, you'll see:

> Fractional shares are only available during market hours. To trade now, buy in whole shares.

For the full trading schedule, see **Trading Hours & Fees**.

#### Step 3: Enable Trading (First Trade Only)

Before placing your first stock trade, you'll need to accept a one-time User Agreement.

The first time you trade:

1. Select **Enable Trading**
2. Review the agreement
3. Check the confirmation box
4. Select **Acknowledge**

After completing this step, future orders go directly to **Preview**.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1790800155-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F3kiM6CAFBZoTCJcZ8X7k%2Fuploads%2FVoFjGvSE15li6X5mJZIa%2Fc9f62a2010ec2e20b2f765952129aed0.jpg?alt=media&#x26;token=43f192e4-b84b-404c-bb7f-7eed17c5b31f" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

#### Step 4: Review the Quote

Select **Preview** to request a live quote.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1790800155-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F3kiM6CAFBZoTCJcZ8X7k%2Fuploads%2FYc0uWNKavQcKjkyr4Dbc%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=4a7e087b-ea9e-4e5a-a079-04a0ff4a3a77" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Backpack retrieves the quote when you click Preview—not while you're entering a quantity.

You'll briefly see:

> Routing for best execution...

Once the quote is available, you'll see an order summary including:

* Estimated Price
* Total

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1790800155-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F3kiM6CAFBZoTCJcZ8X7k%2Fuploads%2Fv9Id1ZOw7gemQd3fqDW7%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=f3db3f5a-3be9-4146-be16-f52032a29edf" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

{% hint style="info" %}
**Quotes are short-lived and refresh on their own.** A quote is only valid for a few seconds. If it expires while you're reviewing, Backpack automatically requests a fresh one and the new price replaces the old.
{% endhint %}

#### Step 5: Place the Order

**Confirm the trade.**

One of the following outcomes will appear:

| Status           | Description                                                     |

| Trade Successful | The order filled successfully |
| Order Pending | The order is still being processed |
| Order Failed | The quote expired or market conditions changed before execution |

**Common messages you might see**

| Message | What it means | What to do |

| **No quote available** | The broker didn't return a price within a few seconds — usually because the market is closed, the stock is thinly traded, or a brief hiccup. | Wait a moment and request the quote again. |
| **Order pending** for a while | Most orders fill in seconds; a longer pending order is filling slowly or has timed out. | If it doesn't resolve, request a new quote and place the order again. |
| **Order failed** | The price moved past your quote, the order timed out, or funds were moved before settlement. | Request a fresh quote and try again. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://support.backpack.exchange/backpack-securities/trading-stocks-and-stock-perpetuals/on-mobile.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
