Read and interpret transaction data on blockchain explorers

Blockchain explorers are essential tools that allow users to view transactions, accounts, and smart contract activities on various blockchains.

In the context of Solana, several explorers are available through Backpack Wallet, including Solana Beach, Solana Explorer, Solana FM, and Solscan. Each platform has unique strengths tailored to different user needs.

In this article we explain how to interpret the data displayed in blockchain explorers, using Solscan as an example to illustrate key transaction details.

What blockchain explorers are used for

Transaction tracking

  • Search for specific transactions using unique transaction IDs

Account information

  • View account balances and transaction history associated with public addresses
  • Access details about crypto tokens, NFTs, and other digital assets
  • Review transactions completed by the account

Smart contract interactions

  • Examine execution history and status of smart contracts

Network performance

  • Statistical analysis of blockchains such as TPS (transactions per second), validator performance and token staking

How to view transaction details in Backpack Wallet

The primary use of blockchain explorers is to look up transaction IDs and view account information, typically in the context of examining wallet contents. Most wallets, including Backpack Wallet, provide transaction IDs readily after signing transactions.

These can be found on the final confirmation screen or in transaction history menus.

App interactions include:

  • Assets sent
  • Assets received
  • Token swaps
  • NFT mints and purchases

Each interaction has a specific transaction ID accessible in the activity menus. Click on the Signature ID to view more details about the transaction.

The transaction ID is located at the bottom of the menu; clicking it will automatically open a blockchain explorer.

How to interpret transaction data in blockchain explorers

Using Solscan as an example (though most explorers present similar information), blockchain explorers typically display:

Blockchain explorers typically display the following information about a transaction:

  • Signature: the unique ID that represents a transaction
  • Block: details about the block hash in which transaction was validated with
  • Timestamp: an exact snapshot of transaction time and date
  • Result: describes if transaction was successful or failed
  • Signer: the account address(es) who approved or denied the transaction
  • Fees: transaction costs from the blockchain

They also display granular details about the specific transaction such as:

  • Account interactions: accounts involved in the transaction (e.g. sender/receiver)
  • Smart contracts: the smart contract(s) which enabled the transaction
  • Instruction details: specific actions and commands executed within a transaction
  • Program logs: records of events that occur during the execution of transaction
